How to properly dry laundry

One of the main questions we get is how to properly dry laundry to make my clothes last longer? So we thought we’d write a post on how to properly dry laundry. When it comes to drying your laundry here are a few tips that may make things better for you and your clothes.

Drying delicate clothes or things you just want to last longer.

There are a few items of clothing that are just better air dried, either hanging or laid flat. The label on the article of clothing can help you determine this. Here is a link to help you read those labels, especially the ones that only have symbols. But for those that can go in the dryer but just need a little extra care you can put them in the dryer for about 5 to 7 minutes and then take them out and either hang or lay out to finish drying. This way they dry a lot faster and it takes the wrinkles out so there is no need for ironing or very little need. The type of fabric determines whether you lay it out or hang it. Again the label can help you that. In general if it is a knit fabric like sweaters or anything that is stretchy it is best to lay them flat. If it is a cotton fabric or similar, something that doesn’t stretch you can hang. Which also helps with the wrinkles. If you hanging them or laying them flat just smooth out any wrinkles with your hands. You’ll find treating your favorite clothes this way will help them last much longer.

Drying sheets and towels.

Most dryers nowadays have a sanitize setting. This is a great setting for sheets and towels, it just adds that extra clean feeling. Dryer sheets for towels can be optional. Some people prefer the softness that the dryer sheets provide, but the reason things are softer is because dryer sheets put a coating on things to help with static cling and for softness. That coating also makes things less absorbent. So it’s a personal choice if you want your towels more absorbent or more soft.

Drying bulky things like bedding.

Heavy bulky things usually need to be rearranged in the dryer a few times during the cycle. They tend to wad up and what ever is in the center will not get dry. For things like blankets, once or twice during the cycle just open the dryer and feel for the wetness and make sure that’s on the outside and the side that is more dry is one the inside. For things like big comforters it may be best to put them in a commercial dryer.
